HEADSHOT QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Everything people ask before booking a session at our New York City studio.

Where is your studio in New York City?

We're at 134 W 26th St, Suite 1203, New York, NY 10001, in Chelsea, between 6th and 7th Ave. It's a straight shot from most of Manhattan: the 1 at 28th St, the F/M at 23rd St, the N/R at 28th St, and the C/E at 23rd St all put you within a few blocks. Penn Station is about a ten-minute walk.

Studio hours are Monday through Friday, 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. If you're coming in from Brooklyn, Queens, Jersey, Westchester, or Connecticut , a lot of people do, build in a buffer and show up a few minutes early so you're not walking in winded.

How much does a professional headshot session cost in NYC?

Sessions start at $500. That covers 2 hours in the studio, Peter or Britney directing you the entire time.

Add-ons: professional hair and makeup runs $300 and takes about an hour before we shoot. Additional retouched images are $150-300 each depending on the photographer.

We're not the cheapest headshot studio in New York and we've never tried to be. What you're paying for is photographers who has spent twenty-plus years figuring out how to get a real expression out of someone who swears they're not photogenic, and a photo you'll actually use instead of quietly hating.

Payment happens when you book, which locks in your slot on the calendar.

How long does a headshot session take?

Plan on 2-3 hours in the studio. Add an hour on top if you've booked hair and makeup.

Most people are surprised by how fast it goes. Peter shoots and directs continuously. There's no standing around while someone fiddles with a light. You'll review images with him before you leave, so you're not going home wondering whether you got anything good.

When do I get my photos back?

Retouched finals land in your inbox within 1-2 business of your session.

Do you shoot corporate and team headshots for NYC companies?

Yes, and it's a big part of what we do. We photograph corporate teams at our Chelsea studio and on-site at offices throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the greater New York area.

For teams, everyone gets the same lighting, the same background, and the same direction, which is the entire point. A leadership page where one person looks sharp and six people look like they got ambushed in a hallway undercuts all seven of them. Consistency is what makes a team page read as professional.

Team pricing is per-person and scales with headcount. For groups of 20+, reach out and we'll put together a quote and a shoot schedule that doesn't blow up anyone's workday.

Do you photograph executives and C-suite leaders?

Constantly. Executive headshots are among the most-used photos in the room. They end up on annual reports, board pages, conference programs, press releases, and LinkedIn, often for years.

The challenge with executive portraits isn't technical. It's that a lot of accomplished people look stiff on camera, because they've spent thirty years being told to look serious and nobody ever showed them what "approachable and in charge" actually looks like. That's the part Peter coaches. Authority and warmth at the same time. That's the whole target.

We work around executive calendars. If you need a tight window, say so when you book.

Do you shoot actor headshots?

Yes. Peter has been shooting actors in New York for over two decades, and his work has helped a lot of people get seen by casting.

Actor headshots follow different rules than corporate ones. Casting directors want range and they want the person who's going to walk through the door. We'll shoot multiple looks in a session so you have options for commercial, theatrical, and whatever else your rep is pushing you out for.

Bring your wardrobe options. We'll talk through what's working before we start shooting.

I'm terrible in photos. Will this work for me?

This is the single most common thing we hear, and it's almost never true.

"Not photogenic" usually means nobody has ever told you what to do with your face. Most photographers say "relax" and "be natural," which is the least helpful direction in existence, and then everyone stands there getting tenser.

Peter's whole approach is direction, specific, physical instructions about your jaw, your eyes, your shoulders, your posture. Small adjustments you can't feel but the camera absolutely can. You don't need to arrive knowing how to pose. That's literally the job you're hiring us for.

Read the reviews above. A striking number of them start with some version of "I hate having my picture taken."

Do you offer hair and makeup?

Yes. Professional hair and makeup is available as an add-on for $300-$450 and takes about an hour or two before your session starts.

Worth it for most people, and not just for the reason you'd think. The camera flattens skin texture and washes out color under studio light, makeup puts back what the lights take away. Our artists shoot for camera, not for a night out, so you'll still look like yourself.

Book it when you book your session so we can schedule the artist.

Can I see the photos before I leave?

Yes. You'll review images with Peter on a big screen during your session, and you'll choose your favorites before you walk out. Nothing gets sent to a black hole for a week.

What if I need to reschedule?

Give us a couple days notice and we'll move you at no charge. Things come up. Just tell us as early as you can so we can offer the slot to somebody else.

How far in advance should I book?

We're typically booking 2-3 weeks out, and it gets tighter around busy periods. If you have a hard deadline, a launch, a conference, headshot day at your firm, book early rather than hoping.

Will Peter shoot my session personally?

Peter shoots most sessions at the New York studio himself. Our team also includes Britney Young, trained in the same direction methodology and shooting in the same studio with the same lighting.

If it matters to you who's behind the camera, say so when you book and we'll confirm before you pay. No surprises.

Why book with Peter Hurley instead of another NYC headshot photographer?

Fair question. New York has a lot of photographers.

The short version: Peter shoots headshots and nothing else. Not weddings, not products, not events. Twenty-plus years pointed at one problem, which is getting a genuine, confident expression out of a regular person in a short window.

He also teaches this. Photographers fly in from around the world to learn his direction method through Headshot Crew. When you book a session, you're getting the direction technique from the person who developed it.

The reviews on this page will tell you more than we can. Read a few.
